Gregg Laananen - Fire in the Moon

Gregg Laananen is a self-taught artist living and working in the Skagit Valley. His artwork is informed by observations of nature, automatic drawing, the role of chance and intuition, material investigation, and the interplay of different kinds of abstraction. In Fire in the Moon, Laananen breathes life and color into the Pacific Northwest landscape through visceral interpretations of waterfalls, forests, and isolated elements of nature, alternating between painting in the studio and out of doors. This new group of paintings is charged with the raw honesty of observation. Painted boldly in a style the artist describes as “informed but naive,” the work reflects a search for truth in the waterfalls of the mountains, the waves of the coast, and the intimacy of still life. Plants, flowers, and flumes are rendered with visceral, highly textured paint application in a style that values simplicity and immediacy. The artist also creates enchanting floral still lifes, drawing attention to the quiet intimacy of individual forms.
