Karen Kosoglad - Finding the Moment

In Finding the Moment Karen Kosoglad presents figurative paintings that center on women in quiet, reflective states. Working from life, she captures what she calls the “gestural moments in everyday life,” emphasizing the interplay of weight, rhythm, shape, and color. Her compositions—sometimes richly chromatic, sometimes pared down to near-monochrome—are anchored by bold contour lines that trace the curves of the body and define form with immediacy. Figures appear seated in domestic interiors, accompanied by the artist’s dog, or placed within metaphysical landscapes, often doubled through mirrored reflections that introduce ambiguity, memory, and layered narrative. These works are less about the sitter’s identity and more about the artist’s response to the act of painting itself. Gesture becomes the underlying structure of Kosoglad’s practice, while her process of deconstruction reflects an ongoing search for balance and “rightness” of form. Alongside her paintings, she also produces monotypes and intimate collages crafted from vintage sheet music and found printed ephemera, further developing her exploration of composition and fragmented imagery.
